Speaker Biography

Norah Osebe Mauti has a wide range of experience in the field of library and information science (LIS) in academic institutions. She has been consistently in this field for the last 33 years. She is the associate librarian at Judith Thomas Library at Adventist University of Africa (AUA) in Kenya, Nairobi, where she has worked for the last 10 years. Prior to joining AUA, she worked at the British Council and in other institutions of higher learning including United States International University, Africa. She holds a Bsc. in Library and Information Science, and Msc. in Library and Information Science from Moi University in Kenya. Currently, she is a PhD candidate in Information Science at the University of Nairobi. Norah’s fields of interest are: information architecture, digital technologies in LIS, information literacy, leadership and emotional intelligence and telecommuting. Norah has published articles in peer-reviewed journals in some of these areas.

The term telecommuting was first coined in the 1970s, and scholars and practitioners have debated the merits of working away from the office because it is a fundamental shift in how organizations have historically done business. Telecommuting, also known as teleworking, refers to work arrangement and agreement to carry out job duties and responsibilities from remote locations away from the traditional office or workplace. The current digital technologies have enabled mobile connections, and people can work away from the offices worldwide. Telecommuting is performed either on occasional or permanent basis. Literature reveals that there is widespread telecommuting in the developed world as opposed to the developing world. Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic, a lot of light has been shown on telecommuting globally due to frequent lockdowns and restricted movements. Hence the term telecommuting or working from home is more on the surface in developing countries like Kenya where the government, private sector and academic institutions had to devise methods of working from home during the frequent lockdowns. These unprecedented phenomena affected operations in academic libraries in institutions of higher learning. Consequently, the academic librarians had to innovatively device ways of remaining productive and relevant amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic that is still taking a toll in the lives of people. The objective of this presentation is to establish the contribution of telecommuting to productivity and innovation in academic libraries in Kenya in the wake of COVID 19 pandemic.
