Description

The shift from the traditional library to the digital library environment has identified new opportunities and challenges to librarians. Traditionally librarians offered their services from a physical location with physical information materials. Currently, with advancements in technology, libraries and librarians exist in virtual environments, therefore, they have opportunities to use modern technological tools to hasten service provision to their patrons. Digital libraries provide solutions to the challenges traditional libraries have, such as storage space for collections. Virtual libraries can be defined as internet-based digital libraries. Librarians have to change their mode of operation to face the challenges of modern technology in the virtual world. With use of data from existing literature, this presentation aims to examine the change in the roles of librarians, skills required by librarians to adapt and innovate in the virtual worlds, and their relevance in these environments. Further, this presentation seeks to show how librarians will remain relevant in the changing information environment to provide information to users while implementing use of virtual technologies that will assist in learning.
