Abstract (Description of Research)
This presentation is a kinetic study of the formation of aliphatic alkenyl cations from 2-methyl-2-hexene with concentrated sulfuric acid. The rate constant of the reaction is calculated at various temperatures to determine the activation energy of the reaction. This study aims to support the proposed mechanism of protonation of 2-methyl-2-hexene with sulfuric acid, which undergoes a hydride shift to produce an aliphatic alkenyl cation that may undergo resonance to produce a tertiary carbonation. Furthermore, thermodynamic values for the reaction are determined using the Beer-Lambert law and relationships between enthalpy, entropy, and equilibrium constant.
