Donald Keefe is an assistant professor of art at Southern Adventist University. His painting Stella was made during the economic recession when, for a time, he was unable to find work. He experienced personal conflict between his desire to be a providing husband and his inability to fulfill that role. The focal point is an airplane landing gear, which is a masculine form, but has little potential apart from the airplane. The scene was inspired by archaeological excavations of tombs, monuments, and stelae.
