Description
Seaman Joshua Hopkins received this Seaman’s Protection Certificate on November 17, 1847 from the state of Rhode-Island and Providence Plantations. Details regarding his physical appearance are noted on the document. Seaman protection certificates were given to American sailors to protect them from being impressed by the British. This document was donated to McKee Library in memory of Dr. Benjamin McArthur in 2017.
