About the Author
Growing up, Katie was surrounded by individuals who set her on the path to lifelong creativity. Her mother was an avid quilter, and her father a hobby carpenter, leaving lots of supplies around the house to play with. Owned by her mother, the family craft store was a place of childhood dreams growing up. Painting, sewing, paper crafting and so much more became part of everyday life for Katie at a very young age.
Since 2012, Katie has owned her own art studio in Chattanooga out of her home, creating countless original pieces of art, teaching art classes to community members from children to adults, illustrating children’s picture books, and working in the field of marketing and design. The life she has created is always busy, but never seems like work as she carries passion in everything she does. Most importantly, this year, she is an Adjunct Professor for the School of Journalism and Communications here at SAU. She is thrilled to bring her knowledge to the university and is excited to get to know the student body.
The Art and Sounds of the South Exhibit
The Art and Sounds of the South is inspired by the art and music of the Appalachian region. The unique pieces you see in this collection are based on real instruments, quilts and other objects that have helped shape the people of our area. Focusing on the bluegrass and folk music roots genre that originated in the late 1930s and early 1940s in Appalachia, many of the instruments depicted are designed from actively played or vintage pieces that are near and dear to local musicians and friends.
The quilts are inspired by the rich history of textile art that is so prevalent in the South. For many generations, Appalachian women would use quilts to keep their families warm during the cold nights. The styles and patterns used were passed down from generation to generation to continue the tradition. The Art and Sounds of the South Art brings you a taste of this rich history.
This exhibit was on display on McKee Library's Main Floor during the Fall 2024 semester.
