Join us for "America’s Long Nineteenth Century: Ideas, Transitions, and People," a dynamic conference co-led by McKee Library and the History Department at Southern Adventist University. Taking place on April 3, 2025, this event delves into the rich tapestry of American history spanning from the early 1800s to the dawn of the 20th century. Explore transformative ideas, pivotal transitions, and the influential figures who shaped the era. Engage with leading scholars, participate in thought-provoking discussions, and uncover the intricate narratives that defined a crucial period in American history. Don't miss this opportunity to deepen your understanding and connect with others who are passionate about the past.
This year's conference will especially feature papers in honor of the memory of Ben McArthur, whose work as a teacher and scholar of the long nineteenth century covered subjects from American cultural history to US government, Christianity, pedagogy, and local history. Because of this special focus, our conference will conclude with a plenary address in coordination with the Southern Scholar's Third Annual McArthur Lecture.
We are thrilled to welcome Catherine Brekus, Charles Warren Professor of the History of Religion in America at Harvard Divinity School as the McArthur Lecture speaker.
We are now accepting proposals for presentations. We welcome papers on many themes and use a variety of methodologies for studying the long nineteenth century: traditional political, religious, social or economic history, as well as papers featuring public history topics, local or family history, and pedagogy. Submit your proposal by March 3, 2025, to be part of this compelling exploration of 19th-century American history. Share your research and insights with a vibrant community of scholars and enthusiasts. We look forward to your contributions!
