Professional Transitions: Preparing for Change
Department
Nursing
Date of Activity
Fall 10-7-2022
Abstract
People who are anticipating a professional transition, like a change in career or role, often experience stress and need additional education (Manciagli, 2020). Making a career change can be a complex process that can be simplified with a plan (Castrillon, 2019). Amitabh (2021) recommended persons preparing to change careers carefully consider the why, the what, and the when before starting on the complex journey. This process can be challenging for nursing students and nurses to navigate on their own. The purpose of this workshop is to assist attendees in developing a plan to ease the transition process.
The Professional Transitions Preparation Workshop will help attendees prepare for an upcoming professional transition. During this 1-hour workshop, attendees will collaborate with each other while completing the worksheet. By the end of the workshop, attendees will have a completed blueprint to guide their upcoming transition. At the end of the workshop, attendees will be invited to complete a short survey to evaluate the effectiveness of this workshop. The evaluation of the workshop is part of an IRB-approved study.
This workshop is designed for nursing students (undergraduate and graduate) and nurses who are planning or considering a professional transition. The theoretical framework for the workshop is Benner's novice to expert model and Duchscher's stages of transition theory (Candela, 2020; Murray et al., 2019). The presenter will briefly describe his own transition, motivators, needs, barriers, supports, resources, and next steps while allowing attendees to reflect and collaborate on their own journey after each section.
