Abstract
The use of games in learning contexts is called game-based learning (GBL) and has been found to positively affect learner engagement. Although there are several standalone gamified apps, they are not game-based engagement management systems. Also, there are learning management systems with gamification support. However, these tools do not have a focus on gamifying the education process. Other tools have gamified features, but they do not have immersive, game-based interfaces. These platforms use gamification, but are not, ultimately, game-based. Due to these limitations, our contribution is a game-based management system to improve student engagement through the use of storytelling, character customization, badges, scoreboards, and other interactive activities. This paper presents the technical overview of the GBL platform. Also, two software modules are explained, namely activity and character modules.
