Abstract

This article is based on the author's engagement with the biblical book of Job as part of his grief due to the death of his son.  The author uses Job to present three "E's" -- Empathy, Explanation, Exhortation -- to emphasize the role of empathy in ministering to the grieving.  The author discovered a framework for understanding the seeming silence of God in his own journey as an act of empathy, and shares how that framework changes how the reader should perceive God's interactions with Job starting in chapter 38.  God acts in a way to restore Job to a proper grief process.
