Abstract
An Introduction to South Korean Choral Music, History, and Pronunciation This session offers a practical and culturally grounded introduction to South Korean choral music for educators. With the global rise of K‑Pop, K‑Dramas, and Korean cuisine, interest in Korean culture has never been higher—yet many choir directors are unsure where to begin when approaching Korean repertoire. This session provides an accessible starting point through a concise overview of Korean music history, including traditional folk genres, music during the Japanese occupation, and the development of Western choral traditions in Korea. Participants will engage in interactive folk‑song singing, explore stylistic considerations, and receive clear guidance on common Korean pronunciation challenges in choral settings. The session also highlights a curated list of South Korean choral composers and approachable repertoire, offering practical programming resources and expanding awareness of underrepresented choral literature. Emphasizing authentic transmission of musical and cultural legacy, this session invites discussion, exploration, and meaningful engagement with Korean choral traditions.
