Description

The theory of semiotics seeks to identify meanings from the sights and sounds – or signs – that fill our lives. Roland Barthes, a French critical scholar, is accredited with providing many of the theory’s concepts. One of the constructs that is still studied today is that of myth. Although Barthes’ concept of myth has undergone criticism by scholars, research demonstrates that the theory still has value today. Through an understanding of what signs are, what a myth is, and how to deconstruct myth, lasting change can be created personally, spiritually, and culturally. This presentation will explore Barthes' concept of myth in several areas.
